“In Italy for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.”
This is the famous line delivered by the great Orson Welles in Carol Reed’s ‘The Third Man’, the classic film of Cold War espionage and treachery.
The implication being that art and culture can still, and indeed often does, flourish in times of conflict. Such has been the case in Hong Kong during the past seven, eight months.
