Will Warburton, Victorian gentleman, is apparently secure. He lives comfortably, has a prestigious job, rosy prospects, a beloved family and many friends. But then disaster strikes, and Will finds out what his friends are made of. Even worse, in order to keep body and soul together, he is obliged to turn his hand to trade: to become - and Will cannot imagine a crueller fate - a grocer.
This is George Gissing's last novel, originally published in 1905, two years after his death.
