On August 12, 2017 Daniel Groshong was killed in East Timor when he was struck by a falling tree while riding inside a jeep. He was 54 and left behind his wife, Menzi Dacuycuy, and his two teenage children, Agos Patrick and Anna May.
Daniel was a resident of Hong Kong and an accomplished photojournalist whose works have appeared in major publications around the world. Daniel was also an activist and environmentalist who fell in love with East Timor through his work as a photographer. To Daniel East Timor was his home away from home and he spent countless hours in East Timor helping its people as best he could with the limited resources he possessed.
Ye Olde Bookseller was introduced to Daniel’s wife, Menzi, through a mutual friend who told me that Daniel had left behind some books when he died. A few weeks ago I met Menzi at her home. She was gracious, patient, and understandably a bit on edge. She told me about Daniel’s love for East Timor, his selflessness for its people, and how he used to take his children on hikes in Sai Kung. I could tell the wounds were still fresh for Menzi.
This is a book of photographs of East Timor and its people, its environment, and its wildlife. The photographs were taken by Daniel and strangely enough they are a fitting tribute to our friend whose final words in the book were: “Once you allow Timor into your heart, this beautiful land will forever be a part of you.”
RIP Daniel Groshong. You will be missed but not forgotten.
